ASB has a rich history in fostering the Creative Arts. Creativity encourages students to take risks, think critically, solve problems, and to approach life with imagination and authenticity.
We believe that the Arts are an indispensable part of the human experience. They provide opportunities for exercising creativity and imaginative participation far beyond the boundaries of traditional subjects, disciplines or occupations. The Arts bring joy, enrichment and fulfillment on an immediate and personal level, and they prepare students for success through projects which foster original thinking and fruitful collaboration.
Our Fine and Performing Arts Department expose students to technical, historical, and multicultural aspects of the arts, with varied opportunities for creative expression. In these ways, the arts not only aid in a more fully engaging life but in living life more fully.
Every year we host the ASB Annual Arts Festival, to showcase the creative arts at ASB. Included in our festival are exhibitions of the spectacular artwork that is created by our students from Pre-K to Grade 12, theater performances, solo singing performances, and a music concert.
Each year our Elementary, Middle, and High Schools create a number of Theater and Musical Theater productions. These are run as co-curricular activities, and students are invited to audition for on-stage and backstage roles. In Middle and High school, our productions are usually performed in our Black Box Theater, a purpose-built, intimate theater space that seats around 150 people. Our productions are directed by our Middle & High School Drama teachers. They are professionally produced, and our students engage with their peers and adult mentors in collaborative and challenging processes which result in entertaining and slick events that are one of the highlights of the school year.
Some of the recent productions that have been put on at ASB include:
- Three Days in The Country, by
- CATS, by Andrew Lloyd Webber
- Urine Town, a Broadway Musical
AMIS Honor Band and Choir Festival
ASB is a member of AMIS: The Association for Music in International Schools. AMIS is dedicated to the promotion of excellence in all levels of music education. AMIS sponsors a variety of music festivals annually which are specially designed to benefit students in international schools. Middle school students generally need to audition, be selected, and spend time working independently on their music before travelling to a choir and band festival.
At ASB the music program includes both instrumental and choral components and in grades 11 and 12 we offer the IB Music program. In high school, students have the opportunity to participate in the curricular band and choirs but can also choose from special offerings like the jazz band and show choir, or being part of the musical. Learning about the music of various times and cultures while performing it makes the learning authentic and it becomes a lasting part of who the student is.
Our Visual Arts extend Beyond the Classroom, and we offer a number of different visual and fine arts. Students have the opportunity to explore different art formats and mediums, including local art styles such as Warli Art, mandalas, and screen printing. Through Art, our students find the freedom to present themselves in a variety of creative ways, including presentations, demonstrations, and exhibitions.
