High School
Dear Parents and Students ,
Welcome to the American School of Bombay High School. We are
proud of what we offer our students. If you are a prospective student, parent
or faculty member we welcome your interest.
ASB offers a truly diverse setting representing over 40
different nationalities; students in the High School at the American School of
Bombay prepare themselves for a successful college experience by engaging in a
challenging course of studies based on a liberal arts model. Students in grades
9-12 are empowered through the development of positive peer and adult
relationships while studying Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies,
Modern Languages, Fine Arts, Physical Education and Technology. Outside the
academic day students participate in a broad range of activities including
sports, service opportunities, after school activities, arts and an annual
outdoor based Week Without Walls program that offers a variety of growth
opportunities.
At ASB we utilize the IB program as a tool which assists us
in our focus on the ASB Mission. All of our 11th and 12th
grade students are exposed to this challenging curriculum as ASB Diploma, IB
Diploma or IB Certificate candidates. In the IB program students study six
subject areas with each course lasting for two years. The course include
English, one Modern Language (French, Spanish or a self-taught Native Language),
one Humanities (Economics, History, Psychology or Business and Management), one
Science (Biology, Chemistry, or Physics), one Math (Math Studies, Standard Level
or Higher Level), or a choice of Music, Theater Arts, Computer Science, or a
second Science or Humanities. Students may also choose an interdisciplinary
course called Environmental Systems and Societies which meets the requirements
of both the humanities and sciences. In addition to these courses students
engage in a class, Theory of Knowledge, which focuses on critical thinking and
philosophy, and they develop research and writing skills and academic
self-discipline through their work on an Extended Essay.
Our ninth and tenth graders undergo studies that are designed
to prepare them for the IB program their last two years. This program includes
integrated Sciences that give them a foundation of understanding that serve them
well as they move into more specific Science courses for their last two years.
The Math program offers courses that prepare students for the three levels of
Math in the IB program. Language Arts, Social Studies, Spanish, French and the
Fine Arts develop student's communication skills and ability to successfully
interact with complex concepts and ideas. Students in grade ten complete a
Personal Research Project that is specifically designed to give them the
research and writing skills they need for the Extended Essay required to obtain
the IB Diploma.
Students also engage in a Community, Action and Service (CAS)
program where they focus on developing themselves through activities and in
serving the wider community. India offers many rich opportunities for students
to focus on and meet the needs of others. ASB has developed relationships with
a number of Non Government Organizations (NGOs), to facilitate student work in
this area. The program leads to many powerful experiences for the students of
ASB.
ASB is committed to ensuring that our students have the
technology skills they will need in their adult lives. To this end we run a
Tablet PC program where every student has their own machine and constant access
to a vast amount of information.
Our school offers a number of clubs, sports, and leadership
opportunities both within and after the school day. National Honor Society,
National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, a variety of service and special
interest clubs make up our options. We are a member of SAISA (what does it stand
for) an organization of schools that offer students opportunities to build
athletic, leadership, academic and creative skills and to engage in competition
and build relationships as the students from Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and Sri
Lanka meet for tournaments and retreats.
